Jim Rubens served two terms in the New Hampshire state senate and ran for governor in 1998. He has chaired the platform committees of both the national Independence Party in 1993 and the New Hampshire Republican Party in 2000. He served as spokesman and senior policy advisor to former Senator Gordon Humphrey in his 2002 run for Governor.
He lead the effort to pass the SB2 all day voting law, initiated legislative debate leading our state’s electricity choice and competition law, lead multiple fights against ratepayer bailouts for PSNH, wrote the state’s charter school law, wrote the first school voucher law to pass a legislative body, and wrote bills to end teacher tenure and to test teachers for basic competency, both vetoed by then Governor Shaheen.
As volunteer chairman of Granite State Coalition Against Expanded Gambling, for ten years Jim Rubens led the successful fight against out-of-state casino interests, recognized by the Union Leader as its 2013 Citizen of the Year for doing so.
Jim Rubens was past board president of Headrest, providing substance abuse counseling and a suicide prevention hotline serving VT and NH. He has founded over a dozen businesses and makes his living as an angel investor in New England technology and healthcare startups. His avocations include science, technology, mountain hiking, music, and whistling. He lives with his wife and son in Hanover, New Hampshire.
